NATIONAL LENS — DeMint, who often fights lonely battles in the Senate, is gaining support for his hold on Southers.

SUSPENDED — State and local officials say they expect Surfside Beach Mayor K. Allen Deaton to have his driver’s license suspended, after he refused a breathalyzer test Friday when police officers from the town arrested him and charged him with driving under the influence.
EDUCATION INITIATIVE — The Aiken County Public School District is among five in the state that will participate in a program to reduce violence in dating relationships and families.
GOING UP IN SMOKE — According to the report by the American Lung Association, South Carolina is one of six states to score all “F’s” for their efforts on tobacco prevention and control spending, smoke-free air laws and rules, taxing cigarettes and helping smokers kick the habit.

ANTI – MCBRIDE — Steve Chapman, owner of the Island Vista Resort, says he and a large group of other local businesses and residents are responsible for three political action committees that formed last fall to defeat former Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride in his bid to return to office. “We became concerned, and we felt the people serving us were doing a pretty good job,” Chapman said Monday. “We are not a bunch of political animals, but we felt we couldn’t just sit on the sidelines and do nothing.”

HIRING — The Census Bureau plans to hire more than 12,000 workers in South Carolina to help canvass neighborhoods to make sure people fill out a census form.
